Chore Rota

A roommate chore rotation you can add to Google Calendar

A chore chart on the wall works until people stop looking at the wall. A rotation that lives in each roommate's own calendar shows up next to their classes, shifts and plans. The standard way to move events between calendar apps is an .ics file, and Google Calendar, Apple Calendar and Outlook can all read one.

Worked example: 3 roommates, 3 chores

Sam, Riley and Jordan rotate the kitchen, the bathroom and the trash for three weeks, starting Monday 2 November 2026.

Three roommates, three chores, three weeks
Week startingKitchenBathroomTrash
Mon 2 NovSamRileyJordan
Mon 9 NovRileyJordanSam
Mon 16 NovJordanSamRiley

Sam's calendar file therefore holds three all-day events: Kitchen on 2 November, Trash on 9 November and Bathroom on 16 November. Riley's and Jordan's files hold their own three.

Adding the file to Google Calendar

  1. Open your personal link and press "Add to my calendar (.ics)". The file downloads to your device.
  2. On a computer, open Google Calendar in a browser, click the gear icon and choose Settings.
  3. Choose "Import & export", select the downloaded file, pick the calendar to add the events to, and click Import.

Google's import runs in the web version of Google Calendar; the events then sync to the app on your phone. On an iPhone or a Mac, opening the .ics file offers to add the events to Apple Calendar directly.

Two things to know

Make yours

The generator builds the rotation and one personal link per roommate. It is free for up to 4 people and 4 weeks; the example above fits with room to spare.
